Recreation & Parks Master Plan
The District of Tofino is developing a Recreation & Parks Master Plan. The Master Plan will help shape the future of Tofino’s recreation and parks services (facilities, programs, and events) over the next ten years and provide Council and staff with a resource to ensure decision-making provides the greatest possible community benefit.
The term “recreation” is broad and means different things to different people. The Framework for Recreation in Canada provides the following definition for recreation. “Recreation is the experience that results from freely chosen participation in physical, social, intellectual, creative, and spiritual pursuits that enhance individual and community wellbeing.” As per this definition, please consider recreation to include sports, casual recreation, arts and culture, and other leisure-based pursuits.
Tofino offers a wide range of recreational, parks, and leisure activities for organized and unstructured indoor and outdoor activities, suitable for people of all ages. The plan will be created in consultation with the community, incorporating various research and engagement methods, including:
Insight and input from the Recreation Advisory Committee (RAC)
Surveys (resident, youth and facility/amenity user group)
An interactive Virtual Mapping tool
Discussion sessions with community organizations & stakeholders
Analysis of current programming and facility operations
Population and demographic analysis
Recreation and leisure trends (including arts, culture and heritage)
Benchmarking (comparison to other communities)
Community Involvement
The District of Tofino is committed to involving the entire community in developing this plan. There are three points of community engagement throughout the project as per the anticipated timeline.
