The District of Tofino continues to work towards improving the safety and condition of Tofino's Multi-Use Path (MUP). Construction on two sections of the MUP damaged by root protrusion is planned to be completed before the end summer 2024.
Due to the path's deterioration and increasing use by visitors and residents, the District has developed an aggressive approach to redeveloping the MUP.
What Is Happening?
The work involves the widening and resurfacing of two sections of the MUP, including:
a section North of Sharp Road near the Dolphin Motel and;
a section between 1426 Pacific Rim Highway and 1436 Pacific Rim Highway
The total area of MUP improvements is approximately 260 linear metres.
Root guards will be installed to prevent further damage. The result will be a smoother, wider and safer MUP.
Vegetation and trees on public property may be removed. Property owners may be contacted directly to discuss issues concerning their property access and/or highway frontage. Gibson Brothers Contracting Ltd. has been awarded the project contract.
Drivers should expect traffic delays and single-lane alternating traffic, with flaggers present to guide bike, pedestrian, and vehicle traffic flow. Please exercise caution and obey signage when navigating through or around the work area.
The District of Tofino appreciates your patience and cooperation during construction and will make every effort to minimize inconvenience to residents and businesses throughout the project.
