Several communities in British Columbia have already enacted bylaws that are specific to preventing bears, cougars and wolves from accessing and becoming conditioned to or dependent on food sources generated or controlled by human activity.

Why?

Conflicts between humans and wildlife continue to present a growing problem within the District of Tofino. In 2021, in Tofino and Ucluelet there were:

  • 13 bears euthanized
  • 70+ incidents involving property damage
  • 3 home invasions

These numbers have added to an already challenging few years of increased human-wildlife conflicts within our community.
