Village Green Sports Court Mural Public Art Project

In 2023/2024, the District of Tofino undertook upgrades to the sports courts located at the Village Green. As part of the site improvement, staff identified the expansive concrete walls surrounding the basketball/pickleball/tennis courts as potential locations for a permanent mural design reflective of the community, ecology, and culture of Tofino.

On May 12, 2025, the Public Art Advisory Committee released the Sport Court Mural Public Art call to artists in the form of a two-stage competition. The call to artists closed on June 10, 2025. Three artists were selected to advance to Stage Two of the competition.

As part of Stage Two, artists received an honorarium to submit a proposed design that is 75% completed.

The Public Art Advisory Committee will evaluate the three proposed designs and make a recommendation to Council to award the project to one artist, based on style, appropriateness to the site, and the artist's ability to adapt the design in response to feedback from public consultation.

Public Consultation

The District is inviting community feedback to inform the final design. Review the following concepts from the three selected artists:

• Sarah Johnston

After reviewing each design, including the concept descriptions, consider the following questions:

• What aspects of the concept designs presented are you attracted to?
• Is the community, ecology (flora and fauna), and culture of Tofino incorporated into the design? What suggestions would you have for improving it?
• Is there anything missing from the concept designs presented?

Residents are encouraged to provide their input by completing the two-question survey below.

Feedback from the public consultation will be sent to the artists for incorporation into a final concept design.

The Public Art Advisory Committee will evaluate the final concept designs and make a recommendation to Council to award the project to one successful artist.

Project Funding

The District of Tofino allocated $25,000 to this project through its participation in the Resort Municipality Initiative (RMI) program. The District directs RMI funding through the Arts and Culture Infrastructure project area of Tofino’s Resort Development Strategy. The Province of British Columbia approves the projects included in the Resort Development Strategy, which together form the District of Tofino’s RMI Shared Cost Agreement.
