In 2023/2024, the District of Tofino completed upgrades to the sports courts located at the Village Green. As part of the site improvements, staff identified the expansive concrete walls surrounding the basketball, pickleball, and tennis courts as an opportunity for a permanent mural that reflects the community, ecology, and culture of Tofino.

On May 12, 2025, the Public Art Advisory Committee released the Sport Court Mural Public Art Call to Artists through a two-stage competition. The call closed on June 10, 2025, and three artists were selected to advance to Stage Two of the process.

The following artists were selected to develop concept designs:

As part of Stage Two, each artist received an honorarium to develop and submit a proposed mural concept that was approximately 75 percent complete.

Public Consultation

The District invited the community to review the three proposed mural concepts and provide feedback to help inform the final designs. Public consultation took place from November 28, 2025, to January 9, 2026.

Community members were encouraged to review the concept designs and share their perspectives on elements such as the representation of Tofino’s community, ecology, and culture.

A What We Heard Summary Report is now available on this page and provides an overview of the feedback received during the consultation period.

The Public Art Advisory Committee reviewed the public feedback and shared it with the artists for consideration as they refine their final mural designs.

Next Steps

Each artist will incorporate the community feedback into their final design submissions. Once received, the Public Art Advisory Committee will review the final concepts and provide a recommendation to Council to award the project to one artist.
