The District of Tofino is continuing to work towards improving the safety and condition of Tofino’s Multi-Use Path (MUP). Construction on this section of MUP damaged by root protrusion is planned to be completed prior to the end of June 2023.
UPDATE: Due to Highway 4 closures and disruptions caused by the Cameron Bluffs Wildfire, paving crews have delayed re-surfacing of the Multi-Use Path until Mid-August at the earliest.
Due to deterioration of the path and increasing use by visitors and residents, the District has developed an aggressive approach to the redevelopment of the MUP to bring it up to the current 4 meter standard for Multi-Use Paths in the province as noted in the BC 2019 Active Transportation Guidelines and based on a condition assessment of Tofino's MUP completed in 2018.
What is happening?
The work involves the widening and resurfacing of approximately 500 lineal metres of the MUP. Root guards will be installed to prevent further damage. The end result will be a smoother, wider and safer MUP between 1296 Pacific Rim Highway and Tree Frog Lane.
Some vegetation on public property may be removed. Property owners may be contacted directly to discuss issues specific to their property access and/or highway frontage. The contract for the project has been awarded to Gibson Brothers Contracting Ltd.
Expect traffic delays and single lane alternating traffic. Flaggers will be present to direct the flow of bike, pedestrian, and vehicle traffic.
Please exercise caution and obey signage when navigating through or around the work area.
The District of Tofino appreciates your patience and cooperation during construction and will make every effort to minimize inconvenience to residents and businesses throughout the project.
