Leash-Optional Dog Spaces
Over the last year, Council has received numerous letters from visitors and members of the community regarding the issue of off-leash dogs. The letters have included concerns for the safety of individuals on the beach while dogs are running at large and increasing the risk of injury. Other letters received have expressed the desire for dogs to have access to the health and social benefits of being able to run and play freely. Currently, there are no designated off-leash areas within the District of Tofino and District of Tofino Animal Control Bylaw No. 866, 2000 requires that “all dogs entering and within the Corporation of the District of Tofino shall be under the control of the owner or harbourer and be leashed, tethered or contained within a vehicle”.
At the December 5, 2022 Committee of the Whole, staff submitted to Council four potential options for the public's consideration.
The District of Tofino would like to hear from members of the community on the proposed locations. Please use the 'Comment' feature below to contribute your thoughts on each proposed location.
