The District of Tofino is improving stormwater drainage along Olsen Road to address long-standing flooding impacts in the area. The project will create an engineered route to move stormwater from Campbell Street down Olsen Road and to a shoreline outfall, helping reduce flooding impacts on nearby properties. The work will replace portions of older drainage infrastructure and add a new storm main where needed, creating a more complete and reliable stormwater system.
What to Expect During Construction
Construction is scheduled to begin September 8, 2026, with substantial completion targeted for mid-October 2026.
Traffic on Olsen Road
Single-lane alternating traffic will be in place along Olsen Road while construction is underway.
Residents will continue to have access to their properties and driveways throughout the work.
Pedestrian and cycling access will also remain open, although people travelling through the area should expect temporary delays around active construction zones.
Street Parking
There will be no street parking on Olsen Road during construction. All vehicles parked on Olsen Road are asked to move their vehicles before construction begins. Any remaining vehicles parked along Olsen Road on September 8, 2026, will be towed to Neill or Third Street.
Construction Hours
Construction will generally take place: Monday to Friday from 7:30 AM to 5 PM
Some activities may vary depending on construction requirements, weather or site conditions.
Campbell Street Impacts
Traffic impacts are expected on Campbell Street between approximately October 5 and October 15, 2026, while crews complete the stormwater crossing. Single-lane alternating traffic will be required during this work.
The District will provide additional notice before these impacts begin and will share updates if the anticipated schedule changes.
Project Cost and Funding
The Olsen Road Stormwater Improvements have a total project budget of $682,472, funded through:
Sewer (Storm) C&I Levy: $283,032
General Capital Unrestricted Reserve: $159,684
General Surplus Reserve: $139,756
Ministry of Transportation and Transit contribution: $100,000
Council awarded the construction contract to Gibson Bros Contracting Ltd. for $557,301.84 plus GST.
